Yarn Count Calculation in Textile Industry (Cotton Count and Tex Count):
In textile industry, count determination is too much needy for all the textile engineers. Yarn count determination method should be known to all. English cotton count and Tex count can be calculated by using different formulas. This article has presented both calculations very simply with their examples.

How to Calculate Cotton Count in Textile Sector?
In case of English cotton count, below formula should be followed during yarn calculation.
Cotton count,
Length of yarn (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
= ………………………………………………………………………
Unit length (yds) × Weight of yarn (pound)
Problem-01:
Find out the cotton yarn count if weight of 8400yds yarn is 1 pound.
Solution:
Here,
Length of yarn (yds) =8400,
Weight of yarn (pound) = 1,
Unit length (yds) =840,
Unit weight (pound) = 1,
So,
Cotton count,
Length of yarn (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
= ……………………………………………………………………………………
Unit length (yds) × Weight of yarn (pound)
8400×1
=……………….……
840×1
= 10s
So, cotton count stands here at 10.
Problem-02:
Find out English cotton count if the weight of 120yds yarn is 0.2ounce.
Solution:
Here,
Yarn length (yds) =120,
Yarn weight = 0.2 ounce=0.2/16=0.0125pound,
Unit length (yds) =840,
Unit weight= 1 pound,
So,
English cotton count,
Yarn length (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
= ……………………………………………………………….…………………
Unit length (yds) × yarn weight (pound)
120×1
=……………………..………
840×0.0125
= 11s
So, English cotton count of this calculated yarn stands at 11.
Problem-03:
If the length of yarn is 140yds and weight 70grain then find out the cotton count.
Solution:
Here,
Length of yarn (yds) = 140,
Weight of yarn= 70grain= (70/7000) pound=0.01pound,
Unit length (yds) = 840,
Unit weight (pound) = 1,
Now,
Cotton count,
Yarn length (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
= ………………………………………………………………..……………………
Unit length (yds) × Weight of yarn (pound)
140×1
=……………………….……
840×0.01
= 17s
So, English cotton count of this calculated yarn stands here at 17.
How to Calculate Tex Count in Textile Industry?
In case of Tex count, the following formula has to follow during yarn count calculation.
Tex count,
Weight of yarn (gm) × unit length (m)
=……………………………………………………………………………
Unit weight of yarn (gm) × length of yarn (m)
Problem:
If the weight of 960m yarn is 20gm. Find out the Tex count.
Solution:
Here,
Weight of yarn= 20gm,
Length of yarn=960m,
Unit length of yarn=1000m,
Unit of weight of yarn=1gm,
So,
Tex count,
Weight of yarn (gm) × unit length (m)
=………………………………………………………………………………………
Unit weight of yarn (gm) × length of yarn (m)
20×1000
=……………………….…
1×960
= 21tex
So, Tex count of this calculated yarn stands at 21.
