Yarn Count Calculation (Metric, Worsted, Denier and Jute Count):
As a textile engineer, each and every one should have sound knowledge about yarn count calculation method for different count such as English cotton count, Tex count, metric count, worsted count, denier count and jute count. This article has provided here a clear solution of yarn count calculation problems for different counts.

How to Calculate Metric Count in Textile Industry?
In case of metric count, the below formula has to follow:
Metric count,
Yarn length (m) × unit weight (kg)
=……………………………………………
Unit length (m) × yarn weight (kg)
Problem:
Find out the metric count if weight of the 400m yarn is 40gm.
Solution:
Here,
Yarn length (m) = 400,
Yarn weight = 40gm=40/1000=0.04kg,
Unit length (m) = 1000,
Unit weight (kg) = 1,
Now,
Metric count,
Yarn length (m) × unit weight (kg)
=………………………………………..
Unit length (m) × yarn weight (kg)
400×1
=………………
1000×0.04
= 10
So, metric count of this calculated yarn stands at 10.
How to Calculated Worsted Count in Textile Sector?
In case of worsted count, you should follow the following formula:
Worsted count,
Yarn length (yds) × unit weight (pound)
= …………………………………………………….
Unit length (yds) × yarn weight (pound)
Problem:
Find out the worsted count if the weight of 80yds is 50grain.
Solution:
Here,
Yarn length (yds) = 80,
Yarn weight= 50grain= 50/7000pound=0.00714pound,
Unit length (yds) = 560,
Unit weight (pound) = 1,
Now,
Worsted count,
Yarn length (yds) × unit weight (pound)
= ………………………………………………
Unit length (yds) × yarn weight (pound)
80×1
=……………………
560×0.00714
= 20
So, worsted count of this calculated yarn is 20.
How to Calculate Denier Count in Textile Industry?
In case of denier count, the below formula has to apply:
Denier count,
Yarn weight (gm) × Unit length (m)
=………………………………………………
Unit weight (gm) × Yarn length (m)
Problem:
The weight of 1350m silk yarn is 7.5gm. Find out denier count.
Solution:
Here,
Yarn length (m) = 1350,
Yarn weight (gm) = 7.5,
Unit length (m) =9000m,
Unit weight (gm) = 1gm,
Now,
Denier count,
Yarn weight (gm) × Unit length (m)
=…………………………………………..
Unit weight (gm) × Yarn length (m)
7.5×9000
=……………
1×1350
= 50 denier.
So, denier count of this calculated yarn is 50.
How to calculate Jute Count in Textile Sector?
In case of jute count, the following law has to apply:
Jute count,
Weight of yarn (pound) × Unit length (yds)
=………………………………………………………
Length of yarn (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
Problem:
Weight of 7200yds jute yarn is 3 pounds. Find out jute count.
Solution:
Here,
Length of yarn (yds) = 7200,
Weight of yarn (pound) = 3,
Unit length (yds) =14400,
Unit weight (pound) = 1,
So,
Jute count,
Weight of yarn (pound) × Unit length (yds)
=……………………………………………………
Length of yarn (yds) × Unit weight (pound)
3×14400
=………………
7200×1
= 6 pounds per spindle.
So, jute yarn count of this calculation is 6.
