What is Carding in Textiles? | Functions of Carding in Spinning | Task of Carding Process in Spinning

Carding Process in Spinning:
In spinning sector of textile, carding process is known as the heart of spinning. Carding is defined as the reduction of entangled mass of fibres into a filmy web which is done by working between two closely spaced and relatively moving surface clothed with the sharp wire points. The significance of carding is still higher where new spinning systems are concerned.

Objects of Carding Process in Spinning:

Some important purposes of spinning process have pointed out I the below:

  1. Opening into independent fibres,
  2. Extracting of neps,
  3. Removal of short fibre,
  4. Blending of fibre,
  5. Fibre orientation,
  6. Formation of sliver.

All the above purposes have explained in the following:

1. Opening into independent fibres:

It is a very important task of carding process in spinning. Here, card opens the flocks into the stage of individual fibres. Because blow room only pens the raw materials into flocks. If this process is perfect then the remaining processes will be perfect. This process helps to elimination of various impurities.

2. Extracting of neps:

In this process, card decreases the number of neps from the blow room. It should be noted here that, card do not eliminate neps, they are mostly opened out.

3. Removal of short fibre:

Very small or fewer than 10% short fibres are removed from the card. Those short fibres can only be removed if those are pressed into the clothing.

4. Blending of fibre:

Intimate fibre with fibre mixing is achieved here for the formation of web and repeated rotation of the fibres in the main cylinder. It should be noticed here that, carding is the only machine for processing the individual fibres.

5. Fibre orientation:

Carding can be given the task of creating partial longitudinal orientation of the fibres.

6. Formation of sliver:
The main output of carding is sliver. Here sliver is formed to deposit the fibre material for further operation. It also done to transport from blow room to draw frame process.
