It is a salt of a carboxylic, sulfuric or phenolic organic acid where the salts are often ammonium or sodium salts. It should be noted here that, acid dyes are typically soluble in water. It plays an important role in wet processing or dyeing technology.

- Acid dyes have a direct affinity towards protein fibre and polyamide fibre.
- Most of the acid dyes are sodium salt of sulphonic acid and carboxylic acids and anion group is the active color component.
- It is always applied on acidic medium with organic or inorganic acid.
- It is water soluble.
- Maximum cellulose fibre cannot absorb acid dye.
- So many bright shades have found here.
- Some acid dyes have good light fastness.
