Relationship Between Productivity and Safety in Apparel Sector:

Apparel or clothing manufacturing factories generally employ hundreds of workers. Some factories employ them in thousands. Most of the workers in clothing manufacturing factories are female. Dangers come from different and sometimes from unknown and unforeseen directions. Employees are the most valuable assets to the company. So, safeguarding them from dangers, hazards, unfavorable environment, injuries, toxic agents, chemicals, fire etc. are very important.

Safeguarding employees is a statutory obligation and it is mandatory to comply. It is necessary for the management to understand and foresee to what sort of hazards or dangers employees are being exposed to while performing their job. It will be wise to take countermeasures earlier so as to forestall any untoward situation that may lead harm to an employee of employees.

Sources of Hazards in Textile and Apparel Industry:

In a conventional apparel manufacturing factory, the occupational hazards in textile or sources of hazard to a worker may be enumerated as mentioned in the following:
  1. Fire hazard mostly occurs from electrical short circuit, loose connections etc.
  2. Hazard occurs from the boilers.
  3. Hazard occurs from band knife, straight knife cutting machines.
  4. Hazard occurs from snap fastening machines.
  5. Hazard occurs from panic, unorganized movement, stampede etc.
  6. Hazard occurs from sewing machines, if they are not equipped with the protective devices like eye guard, needle guard, finger guard, pulley cover etc.
  7. Hazard occurs from chemicals, thinners etc.
  8. Hazard occurs from micro dust generated by fabric cutting machines & over lock machines. Micro dust produced by these machines are inhaled by the operator and adjoining workers and may lead to long term complications and illness like asthma, allergy, TB etc.
  9. Hazard occurs from fatigue: Workers who do their jobs standing or sitting for a long time or repeat a work all the time suffer from fatigue. Fatigue reduces efficiency of an employee.
  10. Hazard occurs from unhygienic toilets and workplace.
  11. Hazard occurs from insufficient light at workstation, lack of congenial ventilation, high temperature & high noise level etc.
